Description

The handsome marbling of hazelnut and caramel tones that blanket this perpetually sought-after date is accented by peripheral appearances of steel-gray patination on both sides. Handsomely preserved despite the presence of a patch of intersecting pin scratches at the central reverse that have been long sublimated into the overall aesthetic. The surfaces remain glossy and well composed under scrutiny, with considerable pronouncement remaining to the devices throughout. Overall, a very satisfying piece and a pleasure to behold in-hand. The first of the coppers from the U.S. Mint -- the die sinker of this first-ever type had little to draw on and so AMERICA became shortened to the now-famous AMERI. variety offered here, an affair that was corrected in the next set of dies.
