Description

Famous Silver Washington Skull and Crossbones Funeral Medal

Finest Certified at PCGS

Pierced for suspension, as befits the type. A historic and desirable piece that was clearly used in the intended manner, this otherwise silver-gray example exhibits mottled charcoal-blue overtones that are more prevalent on the obverse. All devices are fully outlined and clear, and there are no abrasions of note apart from a few minor marks to the obverse portrait that accuracy alone compels us to mention. The famous and rare variety with a skull and crossbones motif at the bottom of the reverse. This type is scarce and desirable, and the demand for a suitable example such as offered here is far greater than the supply of this Rarity-8 medal. These were struck for a Masonic funerary procession held in Boston in 1800 after the death of the Father of our Country, George Washington, in 1799. The present piece is one of five grading events listed at the PCGS website, with the present piece the finest certified of the variety by that firm. (For the record, the other four PCGS-certified pieces are VG-10; VF-20; VF-25; and VF-35.) The last time we offered a specimen was in January 2013 in our Americana Sale, lot 11541. Graded VF-35 by PCGS -- the specimen listed above -- the medal brought $27,384.13 as the final tally. Make no bones about it, the present medallic tribute to Washington will be a focal point of the next cabinet it graces, but not before it is the focal point of heavy bidding activity.
