Rare Colombian and Ecuadorian Gold Highlights 747-Lot Offering Ecuador 1844 8 Escudos Rarity Sets New World Record at $456,000

One of the finest collections of Colombian coins ever assembled saw the light of day for the first time in decades at this year’s New York International Numismatic Convention, bringing bidders from all over the world to compete for its prizes. Assembled from the 1960s into the 21st century by a well-known specialist, the Eldorado Collection comprised coins from Gran Colombia, including those struck in the name of Ecuador, with depth and breadth never before offered at auction. This first Eldorado offering focused on gold coins, as well as silver coins from the 17th through early 19th centuries. Other coins from the Eldorado Collection will be offered in future Stack’s Bowers Galleries auctions.

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries January 11, 2018, sale of the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money commenced the firm’s five official NYINC auction sessions with intense bidding that lasted several hours and saw countless banknote rarities rocket to astounding levels, many at multiples of their pre-sale estimates. Those attending represented a who’s who of Colombian numismatics that recognized the extraordinary opportunity to obtain items that in many cases were confirmed as existing or were being auctioned publicly for the first time. Numerous individual sale results indicate that many of these notes were unique or considered so by the enthusiastic bidding gallery. When all 703 lots were sold (including 98 Internet-only lots sold January 15, 2018), the sale totaled $1,113,766 (all results include the buyer’s premium) and enjoyed 100% sell-through.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to announce the results of their January 2018 International Auction. An excellent array of coins was anchored by the exceptional Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. In total, the Stack’s Bowers Galleries NYINC auction realized nearly $10 million (all prices reported include the standard buyer’s premium).
