Interesting Early Half Dimes

Half dimes have been numismatic favorites for a long time. The D. Brent Pogue Collection has an incredible selection of these, to be offered at auction this May.

The early issues in particular are fascinating to study. The first federal coinage released into circulation consisted of about 1,500 1792 half dismes (as the denomination was first known). These were struck in the shop of John Harper in Philadelphia in mid-May prior to the Mint being in operation (which did not happen until the autumn).

A Condition Census Example of the Famed 1799 Large Cent

A Condition Census Example of the Famed 1799 Large Cent

By Greg Cohen, Professional Numismatist & Consignment Director, U.S. & World Coins

Few series of coins have as devoted a following as early large cents. From the earliest days of American numismatics, this series has attracted serious students, who value not just the monetary value of the coin, but the also the historical context and the cast of characters that make up the provenances of their specimens. Issued from 1793 to 1857, large cents play a large role in the canon of American numismatic literature, with specialized references published as early as the 1860s.

This week’s preview for the Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio April Hong Kong Showcase Auction is a remarkable gold medal from the Qing Dynasty. A Tour Through A Guide Book of United States Coins, Part Six

By Q. David Bowers, Founder

This week I continue my series traveling through the 68th edition (2015) of A Guide Book of United States Coins. This familiar red-covered reference book has been published yearly since 1946 (the first issue having a 1947 cover date to preserve shelf life). At the forthcoming Whitman Coins & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore in the last week of March the 69th edition will be launched, after which it will be available from bookstores, coin dealers and hobby shops nationwide, as well as on the Whitman Publishing, LLC website.

“A.N.A. Centennial Elongates”

By Frank Van Valen, Numismatist & Cataloger, U.S. Coins

In 1991 the American Numismatic Association held its Centennial Summer Convention in Rosemont/Chicago, Illinois, a grand event that was capped by a world-class auction by Bowers and Merena. I walked the bourse floor daily, took a successful side trip and picked up a complete set of Liberty Seated half dollars for a future auction – one of my fondest memories of the trip -- and generally had a fine time
