Rare 1925 Bronze Calvin Coolidge Inaugural Medal Holds Court in Our March 2014 Baltimore Auction

Rare 1925 Bronze Calvin Coolidge Inaugural Medal Holds Court in Our March 2014 Baltimore Auction

By Frank Van Valen, Numismatist and Cataloger, U.S. Coins. Based on the lot description by John Pack, Executive Director of Consignments.

Among 20th-century Inaugural medals, the bronze Medallic Art Company 1925 Calvin Coolidge medal is considered one of the rarest and most desirable. It ranks up there with the very rare Warren G. Harding 1921 Inaugural medal (of which just nine specimens can be accounted for) and Teddy Roosevelt’s 1905 Inaugural medal, which was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and modeled by Tiffany & Co. (of which 125 pieces were struck).

Forged in Philadelphia

Forged in Philadelphia

By Q. David Bowers, Chairman Emeritus

The other day I received a package from Ms. Rebecca E. Gibby that contained a copy of her new book, Forged in Philadelphia, the cover of which is illustrated here. It is published by Abbott Press, a division of Writer’s Digest, and can be accessed on the Internet. The author, born and raised in Philadelphia, draws upon tradition of her Eckfeldt heritage, particularly Adam Eckfeldt, a blacksmith who loaned his talents in machining and other things to the United States Mint after it was formed, following the Mint Act of April 2, 1792.
