1842 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. MS-64 (NGC).

Brilliant-White Choice Unc 1842 Seated Dollar

After an introductory mintage in 1840 struck largely on government account, the newly reintroduced silver dollar had become familiar enough with contemporary bullion depositors to result in a respectable mintage of 184,618 pieces in 1842. This is a readily obtainable date among No Motto Seated dollars in worn condition, most examples circulating widely beginning in the year of issue. Very few survived in Mint State, however, and at the upper reaches of Choice quality the 1842 is decidedly rare from a condition standpoint.
This satin white near-Gem received a crisp impression from the dies that imparted sharp detail to virtually all design elements. The coin is essentially brilliant, and otherwise smooth looking surfaces reveal just a bit of light scuffing to the central obverse highpoint that is hardly worth mentioning. Faint die polish lines, or striations, in the reverse field are as made. Among the finest certified.
