"1778-1779" (Circa 1780) Rhode Island Ship Medal. Betts-562, W-1730. Without Wreath Below Ship. Brass. EF-45 BN (NGC).
Brassy olive-gold mingles with deep brown on the surfaces of this evenly worn specimen. Obverse inverted in the NGC holder. variety with VLUGTENDE removed from beneath Admiral Howe's ship on the reverse. Minimally marked or abraded despite its obvious wear, and choice as such. This enigmatic token, issued by the Dutch, refers to Howe's presence in the Rhode Island area in 1778, and is a staple among collectors of all things "colonial."
