1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Heraldic Eagle. B-31, BB-115. Rarity-5. BB Die State IV. Pointed 9, Close Date. AU-50 (PCGS).
Light silvery gray with a golden cast and a thin band of peach on the obverse periphery. The surfaces are rather smooth, with only trivial, non-distracting abrasions, and the circulation wear is light. Though there are areas of weakness, these are indicative of the variety and are as struck. Numerous interesting die cracks on both sides reveal this as a late die state coin; a most interesting offering for the specialist of the series. The obverse die shows the commonly seen cracks through the date area, and Liberty retains considerable hair separation on the highest curls, features often lacking on most Draped Bust silver dollars. For the reverse the network of cracks offers hours of delightful study, along with the strength of the Heraldic Eagle device and surrounding legends. Perfect for the variety or even the type collector looking for a high grade example of this issue.
