Revising a Great Classic: “EARLY COINS OF AMERICA”

In 1875 Early Coins of America, by Sylvester S. Crosby, was published by the Boston Numismatic Society. Drawing upon his own extensive knowledge as a dealer and scholar and with help from many others he created what remains one of the greatest classics in American numismatic literature.  Today in 2020 the book is widely available in reprint form with multiple offerings on abebooks.com as well as by dealers in antiquarian books.

In addition, the book can be found in its entirety on the Internet. If you are curious, as soon as you finish reading this message you can track down the book right away. If you do, a nice way to begin your exploration is to look at the section on Vermont coppers, starting on page 177. But I say this with a warning: You might become addicted to studying state and related coppers, a specialty from which here is no turning back! If this happens to you, additional resources are available, including on the website of the Colonial Coin Collectors Club (C4), a dynamic portal.

In today’s world of staying at home you might find this to be an ideal book to curl up with in your favorite chair. Illustrated are two pages from the Crosby book. Check it out!
