Appearing in lot 7624 of our Internet Only Session 10 of our August ANA auction is a MS-61 (PCGS) Liberty double eagle that has been verified by CAC. The 1875-S is among the lower-mintage issues that were struck at the San Francisco Mint in the 1870s with just 1.2 million examples produced, compared with the 1.7 million coins struck in both 1877 and 1878.
A portion of the 1875-S mintage was sent overseas shortly after striking, and many of these lower-range Mint State examples have returned to the United States over the past few decades. Perhaps 1,000 to 1,500 Uncirculated examples remain of the 1875-S, most of which grade no finer than MS-61.
Faint pinkish coloration accents the overall medium-gold patina of this lovely example. The luster is uniform and satiny throughout the fields, and remains particularly untroubled on the reverse. A few bagmarks are visible under scrutiny but none of these are individually distracting. The eye appeal is strong for the grade level, and a green sticker from CAC verifies the superior quality. This attractive survivor represents an ideal candidate for a Mint State gold type set.
