When I left off last week I was discussing how the entire landscape of gold double eagle ($20) collecting was changed by first Franklin Roosevelt’s recall of gold coins in 1933 and by the examples that were eventually found in overseas banks and hoards in the 1950s and later.

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries official world coin auction of Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo contains a wide variety of exceptional numismatic collectibles. The coin we feature here hails from northern Italy during the Napoleonic era, a silver Scudo di Lire Sei (Scudo of 6 Lire) from an exciting if tumultuous period in history. Napoleon formed this client state in 1797, though it fell to an invading Austro-Russian Army just two years later.

While never issued for circulation and by all definitions a pattern coin, the Stella's inclusion over the years in the Guide Book has made the denomination an essential part of a complete gold type set. Today, most Stellas are found either impaired or well preserved. Many appear to have ended up as jewelry or as pocket pieces, with some apocryphal accounts even placing these worn coins in the hands of proprietors of Washington's many "houses of ill repute," though this claim has not been reasonably proven.
