It has been long  hiatus—exactly 12 years—since we last offered a portion of the Archangel Collection, the amazing assemblage of Territorial gold coins that were featured in Stack’s November 2006 Norweb Collection catalog.

As we closed out the 1950s, Stack’s continued to benefit from the relationships we had built in our more than a quarter of a century as coin dealers. Collectors who had built collections in part by buying or bidding through Stack’s thought of us when it was time to sell. Another sale of note that we offered in 1959 was the famous Phillip Straus Collection.​​

This unique note by definition represents a unique opportunity. The note, while graded VF, seems to be higher than that. In any event it is full color on face and back and appears exactly like an issued note except for the serial number. Proof large-size federal notes are a rarest of the rare category. Often, years or even decades will pass between offerings of a given variety. As to this note, this is another of many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities in the Joel R. Anderson Collection.

The 1830 Capped Bust dime is one of the more readily available issues in the series, though it is very scarce in high grades. Winston Zack, Louis Scuderi and Michael Sherrill (Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide, 2015) provide an estimate of 3,000 to 5,500 examples extant from just 510,000 coins struck. The size of the denomination on the reverse varied throughout the mintage, providing the Small 10 C and Medium 10 C varieties that collectors pursue today. ​​
