By Harvey G. Stack, Founder

I became a professional numismatist, trained not only by my father and uncle, but also by Stack’s staff of experts and the collectors I met at our shop or at occasional numismatic shows.  Traveling was not as easy in the post World War II era as it is now, so I mostly stayed in New York City, where Stack’s was already a well known coin shop.

Rare Only If Circulated?

In this quiz, we ask about five different United States and related coins that are easy to find in Mint State or Proof but are difficult to find in Fine, VF, EF or AU. (Note: once question has two correct answers, take an extra point if you get both!)

A recently discovered example of a rare 1787 Connecticut copper variety caused heads to turn in our 2014 C-4 (Colonial Coin Collectors Club) portion of our Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo when it realized $52,875. Lot 6164, an example of Miller 36-k.3, is a Rarity-7 variety, at the peak of desirability among collectors.

The Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio December Macau Showcase Auction is just over a month away and the catalog is now available online and can be viewed here. We have a lineup of impressive coins for our auction coinciding with this inaugural Macau Showcase Coin Show. One highlight is a Tuan Chi Jui “Peaceful Unification” Dollar in gold, a classic rarity found in our auction as lot 32143

Here are the answers to last week’s Test Your Knowledge! Did you pass the test? Bob Y. did by participating on Facebook, and Roger R. also participated on our News Media page. They both will be receiving a FREE Stack’s Bowers coin storage box! Remember you can participate on Facebook, Twitter or right on our blog at StacksBowers.com by leaving your answers in the comments section! Thank you to all who participated. Check back next week for a new numismatic question.

A sparkling Gem Proof 1897 Indian cent graded Proof-66 RD by PCGS is one of many highlights in our iAuction sale #3506. The golden-red surfaces are somewhat frosty on the devices and highly reflective in the fields. Careful inspection of the coin justifies its lofty grade.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to add another sale it our already dynamic auction program, the official iAuction of the Michigan State Numismatic Society. The iAuction will be held from November 24-30 and the deadline for consigning is November 19.  We will be accepting U.S. coins and currency to this inaugural event and we offer some amazing benefits to consignors.
