In this article I continue my thoughts on rarity by stating that you cannot make a rarity and trying to create a rarity usually results in failure. Trying to manipulate supply and demand rarely ends well for anyone involved. This is especially true if one attempts to do this as a means to control the market for personal gain and not with the goal of owning and enjoying a coin or other collectible.

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries team will be headed to the Long Beach Coin Expo September 17-19, 2015. Before the show begins, our team will be busy buying and selling coins and currency in our private trading suite, room 104-A of the convention center, Tuesday, September 15 from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Wednesday, September 16, from 9 AM to noon. The show opens for set-up Wednesday afternoon, and will be open to the public from 10 AM Thursday, September 17 through Saturday, September 19. For specific show details visit the official show website at LongBeachExpo.comCome by Table 502 where the D. Brent Pogue Collection, Part II Masterpieces of United States Coinage will be on display on September 17-18, 2015.

Our upcoming November Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo in Baltimore will feature a number of fascinating obsolete banknotes. One such note that I've found to be interesting is a rare $2 Proof from the Bunker Hill Bank of Charlestown, Massachusetts.

Did you know Stack’s Bowers Galleries Founder Harvey Stack received a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Numismatists Guild?  Congratulations Harvey! We are so proud of you.

The first two decades of United States half cent production saw numerous design alterations, both purposeful and unintentional. Though several contemporary denominations exhibit similar diversity, half cents are intriguing in that these changes sometimes involved the often-overlooked third side of a coin, the edge. These distinct variations are both exciting and challenging for specialists of the series, and the 1795 half cent is certainly no exception.

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo this November will feature a highly desirable Norway 1000 Kroner graded Very Fine 25 by PMG.  It’s not often that a Norwegian note garners as much attention as this example. Apart from being an extremely rare high denomination and a century old, this note is also the only one known at PMG. It is certainly one of the most exciting items featured in our November Baltimore auction.
