Included in our April 5 presentation of the Dr. Paul and Rosalie Zito Collection is a virtually perfect Proof 1898 quarter found in lot 4002. It is a true prize for the advanced collector, displaying vibrant and original orange-gold color near the centers with violet and sapphire-blue iridescence near the rims. The surfaces are pristine and virtually flawless under a glass, and there is razor sharp definition to all elements. Satiny luster on the devices is framed by deep reflectivity in the fields that hints at a Cameo designation upon first glance.
Along with the Proof issues of 1896 and 1897, the 1898 is the most consistently well produced and attractive in the Barber quarter series. Even so, few survivors from a mintage of 735 Proofs, are as exquisite as this gorgeous specimen. This coin is the sole finest known example graded by NGC in its category. The only other Proof-69 in existence is in a PCGS holder and in no way competes with the present example in terms of eye appeal. In addition to its attractiveness, the provenance of this specimen begins at the U.S. Mint shortly after striking, where J.M. Clapp acquired it in November 1898. Nearly a century later, in April 1997, it was offered in our legendary Eliasberg Collection sale, where it was described as "certainly one of the very finest remaining specimens." Acquired by our consignor just a month after that sale, this piece represents a monumental opportunity for the advanced Barber coinage or Proof type specialist. It is certainly a piece that will attract significant bidding when it crosses the auction block on April 5th.
