Colonial currency enthusiasts will be enticed by a high grade Massachusetts August 18, 1775, 7 Shilling & 6 Pence note printed by patriot Paul Revere that will be offered in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official United States Currency Auction of the ANA World’s Fair of Money this August in Philadelphia. This remarkable note is graded Choice About New 58 by PCGS Currency. The type is printed on thick paper with the text, title, and date enclosed within three engraved scroll flourishes. The serial number is at top center. A sailing vessel sits docked within a small vignette at bottom left. The all-important “Sword in Hand” back displays a patriot holding a sword in his right hand and a scroll with MAGNA CHARTA in his left. Above him “Issued in defence of American Liberty.” Below is the Latin motto “Ense petit placidam, sub Libertate, Quietem” (by arms he seeks peace with freedom). The denomination is written above while the issue date is below.

This note comes from the August 18, 1775 emission for which 10,000 examples of each denomination were issued. The offered piece is incredibly well preserved with sharply printed inks. Three large margins are seen on the face while the back design is nicely centered in the middle of the note. Just a light corner tip fold is seen in the top right corner. An old collector's annotation is found in the back bottom left corner. The signatures of Wheeler and Plympton are neatly penned in different inks. Revere's famous "Sword in Hand" motif is impeccably detailed. This is one of the few high grade examples from this series we have had the privilege to offer and it carries a pre-auction estimate of $30,000-$50,000.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Official United States Currency Auction of the ANA World’s Fair of Money will be held August 14-18, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
