Author: James McCartney / Thursday, July 30, 2020 / Categories: United States Coin of the Week

The 1915-D Barber half dollar represents the final year of this series and is often a popular choice for high-end type sets of 20th century coinage. The mintage is 1.1 million coins, falling just below the 1.6 million halves struck in San Francisco the same year.  With about 1,250 Mint State examples remaining, the 1915-D is readily available in Uncirculated grades, though the vast majority of these are in MS-64 and lower. Gem examples are scarce, numbering perhaps just 200 pieces in total.

We are thrilled to offer one of the very finest known 1915-D half dollars in lot 2722 of our August 2020 Las Vegas Auction. Certified MS-66+ (PCGS) CAC, it sits at the very top of the Population Reports at both PCGS and CAC. It is pearly and toned in the faintest olive-gold hues, with intense luster and sharply struck devices on both sides. The overall quality is exceptional, making it an ideal choice for an advanced PCGS Registry Set.

This Gem 1915-D half dollar will be offered as part of the Dazzling Rarities Collection in our August 2020 Las Vegas Auction. Featured in lot 2722, it accompanies highlights from the Sherwood Collection of Civil War Tokens, the ESM Collection of Large Cents, selections from the Anthony J. Taraszka Collection of Early Eagles, selections from the D. Brent Pogue Numismatic Library and many other significant collections. The sale is available for bidding and viewing on our website www.StacksBowers.com, or you may contact us to secure a copy of the printed catalog.
