With the Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio January New York International Auction just a week away, there is just one final preview. Sometimes we save the best for last, and this piece is certainly among the highlights of this auction. Historically significant, extremely rare and very important, this coin brings together a fantastic story with substantial rarity to form a true numismatic treasure.

Did you know Stack’s Bowers Galleries has updated our bid increments?  As of December 15, 2015 the following table for prebidding and live bidding increments will be implemented for all U.S. and World auctions.  The increment change is found from $300-$499, where the increments are now $20 instead of $25.  This is the same for the increments $3,000-$4,999, $30,000-$49,999 and so on.

Welcome to our November sale with the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo—a numismatic tradition that dates back into the last century. Three times a year—in March, June, and November—collectors, dealers, and others converge on Baltimore for several days of numismatic immersion and fun. For many years Baltimore has been voted by dealers as America’s favorite coin convention city. This honor is justly deserved. The Baltimore-Washington International Airport is modern and is more hassle-free than most. It is just a half hour ride from downtown, where the Convention Center and Inner Harbor district beckon. Fine hotels (all the leading marques are there) and fine dining also await you.

In this article I continue my thoughts on rarity by stating that you cannot make a rarity and trying to create a rarity usually results in failure. Trying to manipulate supply and demand rarely ends well for anyone involved. This is especially true if one attempts to do this as a means to control the market for personal gain and not with the goal of owning and enjoying a coin or other collectible.
