The next highlight from the Stack’s Bowers April Hong Kong Showcase Auction will be a Chinese Provincial issue from Hupeh, a great coin that is tied for finest certified. The obverse shows a left facing portrait of Yuan Shih-kai in his military uniform. The Chinese inscription that appears above Yuan Shih-kai’s bust provides the date and the issuing authority: “Republic of China, Ninth Year.”

Our April Hong Kong Showcase Auction previews continue with this lovely rare pattern Silver Dollar from the final period of the Chinese Empire and the Qing (Ch’ing) Dynasty. The Central Mint in Tientsin – operated by the Board of Revenue in Peking – minted a multitude of coinage types in the later portion of the Empire, in an attempt to unify the currency system of China. Unfortunately, China’s administrative disorganization (as well as insufficient funds) inhibited the reforms from gaining traction.

The upcoming April Hong Kong Showcase Auction is shaping up to be quite a superb event! Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio is eager to begin our many showcase blogs with a gold medal from a pivotal moment in Chinese history. The Boxers seized the city of Tientsin in June 1900, and the Eight Nation Alliance (Germany, United States of America, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Russia and Austria-Hungary) recaptured the city on July 14th.

The Panda Series of modern Chinese coins have seen over three decades of numismatic success, and this August Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio is proud to offer rare Pattern coins from the beginning of this series. In 1982 the China Mint decided to produce a series of bullion coinage. Many design ideas were considered, and not all included the iconic Panda.

Stack’s Bowers is excited to continue previewing our upcoming August Hong Kong Showcase Auction. Our sale is rapidly expanding with desirable modern Chinese, collectible Asian numismatics and vintage Chinese rarities. Today we showcase a lovely piece from Kiangnan Province, which originally comprised the Anhwei and Kiangsu provinces, but by the time this piece was minted in 1897 the separation had already occurred.
