Canadian banknotes have been gaining quite a bit of traction over the past year or two. Whether due to their similarity to U.S notes, their bilingual notes, or their portraits and motifs, there is no denying the increase in collector interest. Here at Stack's Bowers Galleries we are very excited to offer the $2 DC-26a 1923 A-B Black Seal Serial Number 1 with what appears to be the signature of Prince Edward (although this is not authenticated).

A phenomenal example of an iconic design type of Colonial American currency will be auctioned as part of the February 10 Rarities Auction, held by Stack’s Bowers Galleries in conjunction with Sotheby’s. Lot 3 of the Rarities Auction is an August 18, 1775 dated Colony of Massachusetts Bay 6 Shillings note graded Choice New 63 PPQ by PCGS. Notes from this popular Colonial series feature on their reverses the famed “Sword in Hand” vignette engraved by Paul Revere.

The Currency Department of Stack’s Bowers hopes you all had a great holiday season, and wish you a Happy New Year! Also, we wanted to offer a reminder that our upcoming NYINC Sale is at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on January 9 at 9 AM EST. We are looking forward to starting the year off with one of our best auctions, replete with notes that are sure to be highlights in any collection.

As we prepare for the holidays, we are also looking forward to our next sale -- the first of 2016. In our January 9, 2016, NYINC sale we will present a spectacular 100 Pound Egyptian note. This note is just one of the many stunning Egyptian notes from the National Bank of Egypt. However, the color and ornate design of this note make it worth singling out.

It’s hard to believe but December is here already and another year is quickly coming to an end. For many this month means that the Christmas Season is upon us; a time for peace and joy, reflection on the year that’s soon to pass and hope for what could be in the year ahead.

Third party grading of currency has been a part of our hobby for roughly 15 years now. From the very beginning it was a game changer, commoditizing notes and bringing new legitimacy to a market in much the same way it had for coins since the 1980s. Naturally the more mainstream genres of United States currency were the first to benefit.
