Past and Present: An Exceptional Offering of James I

With 2024 off to a good start, we take a moment to focus on our annual February World and Ancient Coins Collectors Choice Online (CCO) Auction scheduled for February 26 to March 1, 2024.  While it contains a wide variety of collectible and sought after issues, one lot in particular stands out. Consisting of three numismatically interesting issues, this set combines the classic style of the early hand hammered gold issues of James I of England with modern renditions of the James I Unite and the final portrait of Elizabeth II. Housed in a custom fitted wooden case, this set immediately catches one’s attention. It features a Choice-Uncirculated Spur-Ryal (15 Shillings) certified PCGS MS-63, as well as two trial commemorative pieces of 500 (5 Ounces) Pounds and 200 (2 Ounces) Pounds issued in 2022, both of which are Superb-Gem Proofs.

The reign of James I was not easy; he ascended the throne at an early age and was totally reliant on his regents, who did not always look out for his best interests. He was the longest reigning Scottish monarch and achieved many of his goals, though he faced difficulties after he was crowned King of England.  He was a patron of the arts and a prolific writer; he eventually had the Bible translated into what is now referred to as the “King James” bible. He was strongly opposed to war and tried to hold to his commitment of peace. Though he failed at this he was able to unite England and Scotland.

Though we are no longer accepting consignments for the February Collectors Choice (CCO) auction, we are always seeking coins, medals, and paper money for future auctions, and are currently accepting consignments for our August 2024 Global Showcase auction and Fall 2024 Hong Kong auction. Additionally, we are accepting consignments for our May Collectors Choice Online (CCO) auction. If you would like to learn more about consigning, whether a singular item or an entire collection, please contact one of our consignment directors at [email protected], today and we will assist you in achieving the best possible return on your material.
