DESCRIPTION Superb Gem 1897-S Morgan Dollar
MS-67+ (PCGS) CACNone Finer at CAC1897-S Morgan Silver Dollar. MS-67+ (PCGS). CAC.
This is a pearly and platinum-white example with the just faintest dusting of golden hues in select areas. The fields showcase an icy reflectivity that subtly contrast the richly frosted design elements. Liberty's cheek is nicely undisturbed and the strike is superior for the issue. Incredibly attractive and among the finest known survivors. This piece sits at the top of the CAC Popular Report across all grading services and only 3 coins have been certified finer by PCGS. An ideal piece for an elite Registry Set.
With a mintage of 5.8 million coins, the 1897-S Morgan dollar is readily available in most grades up through MS-65, becoming considerably scarce at the Superb level. Most examples were placed into storage after striking and were later distributed by the San Francisco Mint from the 1920s through the 1960s. Many saw use in the western casinos of Las Vegas and Reno, while others were integrated into the hoard of LaVere Redfield. With bagmarks and other signs of mishandling impacting the eye appeal on most survivors, this MS-67+ (PCGS) CAC is a significant find. PCGS# 7250.
