Brilliant Superb Gem Proof 1872 Shield Nickel
Only 1 Finer at PCGS

1872 Shield Nickel. Proof-67 Cameo (PCGS).
Icy reflectivity shimmers in the fields of this gorgeous Superb Gem Proof. Overall snow-white and brilliant, the mirrored fields starkly contrast frosty and sharply struck devices. Magnification fails to reveal any notable blemishes and the eye appeal is truly exceptional. Just 1 coin ranks finer at PCGS which makes this an important Registry Set candidate.
Although not recorded at the time by Mint personnel, the mintage of this issue was likely similar to that of most other early Proof Shield nickels and Bowers (2006) estimates it at 850 to 1,100 coins. Most Survivors are impaired by handling or other defects and are typically found in grades of Proof-64 and lower, seldom with any Cameo contrast.

PCGS# 83826.NGC ID: 276N.

PCGS Population: 5; 1 finer.
